Albania to the Istanbul Convention in Armenia: Venice Commission plenary session opinions

Opinion highlights from the plenary session of the Council of Europe constitutional experts of the Venice Commission included an opinion on Albania that determined that even if the President may have overstepped his bounds in postponing local elections, impeachment may not be justified. Addressed as well in the linked press release, a second opinion for Albania calls for re-examining a draft law on immovable property rights.

The Venice Commission also adopted an opinion concluding that no provisions of the Istanbul Convention can be considered contradictory to the Constitution of Armenia. On the contrary, the main obligation of the Convention, to prevent and combat any form of violence against women and domestic violence, already follows from the Constitution and many other human rights treaties to which Armenia is a party. A second opinion for Armenia concerns a recent judicial reform package.

For these and opinions concerning Kosovo, Moldova and Peru, please consult the Venice Commission opinion
