A Chinese defense spokesperson on Thursday expressed strong opposition to the U.S. move to display military prowess in the South China Sea under the pretext of “freedom of navigation.”

Tan Kefei, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks in response to a question concerning joint patrols launched by the Philippines and the United States in the South China Sea.

China believes that defense and security cooperation between relevant countries should not harm the interests of a third party or jeopardize regional peace and stability, Tan said.

He said the Chinese military stands firm in safeguarding national sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and is resolute in maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea.
